Recoleta is the most exquisite and charming quarter of Buenos Aires. The name recalls the Recoleto Fathers monastery of colonial days, which today houses a Cultural Centre which is well worth a visit. The Basilica del Pilar church is the outstanding building in the park; it adjoins the Cemetery with its dazzling mausoleums, where the lives and deaths of generations of Argentine elite are remembered including Eva Peron's. Known as the Paris of South America for its French style architecture, the area is filled with art galleries, museums, among them the Museum of Fine Arts, one of the city's jewels, gardens, fine shopping, trendy bars and restaurants, and the best architectonic buildings of the city. An open air arts and crafts flea market operates on week ends.
